Workshop CFP – SCN IoT

Call for Papers

Satellite communication networks for Internet of Things

(November 19-20, 2020, joint with IoTaaS 2020, Xi’an, China)

Scope

Rapid development for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications has been witnessed in recent years, such as smart grid, smart farming, environment and disaster monitoring. It require world-wide connectivity and robust systems to deliver sensor data and control information across network infrastructure. In view of the ubiquity, uniqueness, availability and built-in resilience of space-based technology, the satellite communication has been playing a critical role in supporting those IoT applications.

By 2020, more than 20 billion connected things are expected to be in use throughout the world. While the majority of IoT networks is terrestrial, satellite communication has been redefined as a complementary solution for cellular connectivity in remote areas. To cater increasing demands for the connectivity, satellite operators are dedicated to develop facilities and network services enabling satellite IoT and integration to terrestrial system for hybrid networks.

Nevertheless, to make effective and robust IoT applications based on satellite networks, some issues are still open to be addressed. For instance, to achieve interoperability between satellite and terrestrial wireless networks, new technical challenges arise in designs of specific protocols, for balancing the QoS requirements and constrained spectrum resources. Moreover, for conjunction of various satellite networks, satellite constellation conception promises to realize dependable, low latency and high-throughput connections, which opens new issues such as satellite routing and resource management.
